Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial competition, 2010
with Matouš Erban
The Holocaust Memorial must be a place of
contemplation, where one can experience an impulse
that will make her/him think about the abhorrence that
has happened – without repulse – in Europe, just few
decades ago.
Our proposal is based on the concept of space
flexion. A slowly rotating curved polished stainless
mirror curtain will reflect ourselves, memories of the
victims, flames and surrounding environment.
A stationary black granite slab will hold the eternal
flame referring to the Name.
The rotation and ever changing character of the
Memorial will help, together with its reflectiveness, to
reduce the impact on sight views. The turning
mechanism will be hidden underneath the boardwalk.
The slab will expose an explaination of the purpose
and history of the Memorial. The concave mirror face
will contain the list of tens of thousands known
surnames of the victim families.
There will be benches to sit on.
